The countdown to the release of It's Great Being a Dad is on! So I'm starting this week with a process post. When I first got Dan's wonderful manuscript I realized the character design was going to be one of the most challenging but fun parts of the job. The story includes a unicorn, bigfoot, robot, loch ness monster, fairy queen ballerina doctor, and a sneaky flying alligator pirate. And a dad. AND (don't tell anyone!), each of those magical creatures corresponds to child playing pretend. So I had to think of what materials each child would use to 'create' their imaginary creature and what how old they would be and what they would look like. Fun! But a bit of a puzzle, too.
I love drawing robots. I think I landed on the design rather quickly with him, and then moved on to thinking about how robot-kid would build himself!
Working through faces and helmet details... Then on to color!
Bigfoot was a little tricker to pin down... lots of sketches...
I have a soft spot for all of these characters, but I was so happy with Bigfoot boy: wearing a furry hoodie, appreciating nature, wearing the big Dad boots. And here he is in color:
Next week: more character sketches!
