I created these wild monkeys for this weekend's NESCBWI Conference, the "First Look" panel, to be specific. Since I needed to create a new image, not in my portfolio book, I thought I'd try something a bit outside my usual color palette. After I sketched the idea I had a flash of Gauguin's Tahiti. I looked at several of his landscapes and pulled some colors but ended up going with something even more technicolor. I'd love to illustrate a whole book in such an over-the-top, lush palette. Plus I finally pulled out that tube of 'pink' gouache from my stash!
